/mood PrivateEye

It was a cold day back in November of 2004 when I first noticed the guest.

I was sitting at my desk sipping a scotch that was cheaper than a $27 suit.  It was quiet.  A little too quiet.  I tried leaning back in my chair when suddenly...I fell.  Ya see, my chair doesn't lean back real well, and I ended up in a pile of dirty laundry with a elbow in a roll of masking tape.  It was a good thing I had my blinds closed.  You never know when some two-bit reporter with a camera might come strolling along through the suburbs to take incriminating pictures.

I took my time getting up. Mostly because my elbow hurt.  But that's beside the point.  Something was over my eyes, so I brushed off the three t-shirts and a pair of swimming trunks that had been there since June...one the floor, not over my face.  Anyway, I sat back up...and that's when she walked into the room.

Ok, so nobody walked into the room.  I should be so lucky.  I ain't had a girl walk into my room since long before I wore those swim-trunks.  Really, I just clcked refresh on my browser.  And that's when I first saw him.

The Guest.  He stood out like a sore thumb.  Just sitting there.  Staring.

Worried he might see me, I tried to duck around the corner.  My leg, unfortunately, got caught in my power cable, and I fell back into the pile of clothes, just as I realized there was no corner to duck behind.  It's a good thing I picked up that masking tape.  Two sore elbows in one day would just about cross the line.

I started to watch his movement.  Started to get a feel for who he was.  I've tracked him ever since, and I feel like I'm getting closer every day.

I will find you, The Guest.  I will reveal your identity, and expose you for...whatever it is that you are...

He was elusive.  He was sneaky.  He appeared and disappeared.  Appeared and disappeared.  I found myself losing sleep as I pondered his mysteries.

And that's when she walked in the door.

Ok, so yet again, no one walked in...I just like saying that.  Wishful thinking maybe.

He generally limited himself to one of two activities.  Both equally disturbing.  Most commonly, he would read the profiles of the locals.  Strangely, never anyone important.  Neve Cherry, or Tyndaleon, or Donie.  Just two-bit cronies like Coran and Grene.  Recently, he started taking his own copies of the information stored here.  He would print topics.

I looked over the thread he printed.  The more I looked, the more my head hurt.  There was no rhyme or reason.  It made less sense than Soogo explaining the theory of hyperdrive on a muon binge.  At first, it looked like The Guest was after Coran.  He'd posted in all the threads.  But that idea fell to pieces real quick.

I had nothing.  The Guest haunted my every thought, but left no clues to his identiy or purpose.  I couldn't eat.  Couldn't sleep.  Couldn't drink...ok, so I could drink.  And I did.  A lot.  Empty cans of Coca-Cola were strewn about my room, as if participating in an elaborate dance with my swim trunks.

I clicked the refresh button.

That's when it happened.

He was registering for a forum account.

Maybe now I'd get my answers.

No offense, but that's not exactly uncommon.  Noni happens to have a very nice profile.  Especially when she's dancing in that short lil dress she was wearing when she first got back into it.... Grin

Quietly he sat in the soft shadows cast by intersection of the luminescent flourescent light next to his keyboard with various objects in the room around him.  Furiously he studied the forums; carefully he sifted through the postings, singling out one by one each key to the nefarious plot which ever thickened in his mind.  "It won't be long now", he thought.  "I'm getting closer.....ever closer".

As he sat there in his Scooby Doo boxers, he hit the print button and listened to the whirring inner workings of his HP Laserjet as it spit out a hard copy of yet another thread.  He picked up the pages as they were spit out, and glanced over them with maniacal glee.  Suddenly though, he sensed something in the back of his mind. His heart started racing.  No...could it be....?

He glanced back over to the monitor and hit F5 to refresh.  Scanning down the page towards the bottom, he saw it:  it was him again.  "d**n that fool Quebe!", he thought.  "You're making this difficult, but you'll never catch me.....rather, it is I who will catch you, and you won't even know it's coming.  Ohhh, no Quebe, you can't get away....from hell's heart, I *stab* at thee.....for hate's sake....I spit my last lugie at thee....*ptui*"

Quickly, he logged off and shut down his computer.

"Who knows what evil lurks within the heart of IFN?", he quietly said out loud.  "The Guest knows....MUHahahahahahaaaaa!"

The MysteriousStranger has shown himself.  And yet, there was undeniable proof that another The Guest lurked and watched.

Did they work together?  Or not?  The enemy of my enemy is my friend.  But which was my friend?  Which my enemy?  If they worked together, who was in charge?  MysteriousStranger?  Or was he just the public face or this fiendish cult of non-registered minds?

The plot had thickened.  The game had begun.
